Best GEO agency for small businesses in Australia: how to choose

By Viveka Mohan Das ·

GEO (generative engine optimisation) is the work of making your business easy for AI answer tools to find, understand and cite. If you run a small business, the hard part is not finding an agency that says it does GEO. It is telling the ones who can show their work from the ones who cannot.

Quick answer

A good GEO agency for a small business works only on how AI answer engines find and cite you, quotes a fixed price and scope in writing, shows dated evidence from its own site including results that went the wrong way, and does not promise rankings or mentions. This page is published by AISearch Global, one specialist consultancy, so read it as our criteria, not an independent ranking.

What GEO is, and how it differs from SEO and AEO

SEO aims to rank your pages in a list of links. GEO aims to get your business named inside an AI-written answer. AEO (answer engine optimisation) and GEO describe the same practice with different names: our AEO guide covers the consultancy-versus-software question, and this page covers how a small business should choose.

The term GEO comes from a 2024 peer-reviewed paper by researchers at Princeton, Georgia Tech, IIT Delhi and the Allen Institute for AI (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024). They tested nine content tactics across 10,000 queries. Adding quotations lifted visibility in AI answers by 40.9%, adding statistics by 30.6%, and citing sources by 27.5%. Keyword stuffing made visibility worse, by about 9%. The paper also found that smaller sites tended to gain the most. Our plain-English summary has the numbers.

Different AI platforms also find their sources in different ways, so one fix does not cover them all. Google’s AI Mode draws on Google’s own index, so ranking well in ordinary search still helps there. ChatGPT and similar assistants may search the web for some questions and answer others from what they already know, which is why being written about in more places than your own website matters too. That is why we look at each platform on its own, instead of reporting one blended number. See where each one stands in our Client Zero update.

What a small business should check before hiring a GEO agency

Specialist focus

Is AEO and GEO their whole job, or one line on a long services list? A broad agency can be good, but ask who actually does this work.

Dated evidence

Can they show dated results from their own site, with the method? A number with no date and no method is a claim, not evidence.

Fixed scope and price

Get the deliverables, the price and what is excluded in writing. Ask what happens after delivery and whether anything renews.

Honest limits

No agency controls what AI platforms do. A credible one says so, and explains that fixing your site and AI platforms updating are two separate clocks.

Who does the work

Ask whether the person you speak to is the person who does the audit, or whether it passes to someone else.

Fixes you can use

Look for instructions written for your own website platform, and a way to check that each change worked.

Red flags

  • A guarantee of rankings, citations or “first place” in AI answers.
  • An “AI visibility score” with no method, no date and no way to reproduce it.
  • Results that only ever go up. Real measurement moves both ways.
  • A retainer with no stated deliverables.
  • Advice that amounts to stuffing keywords. The research above shows it hurts.
  • No sign that the agency has tested its own methods on its own site first.

How we work: the research behind the audit

We are a consultancy that treats its own business as the first test. Here is the loop we follow, and where you can check it.

  1. Test ourselves first. We ran the full audit on AISearch Global before we ran it for anyone else. Client Zero documents the structural score rising from 19 to 91, with every signal recorded.
  2. Measure with more than one instrument. A structural score tells you whether AI can read your site. It does not tell you whether AI recommends you. So we also track what AI tools actually say in answers, over time, and cross-check against other sources. Our Two-Clock Model explains why the structural clock and the perception clock run at different speeds.
  3. Publish the good and the bad equally. In our August 2026 update the structural score reached 100/100 and measured AI visibility rose to 16%. But all six unbranded prompts, the questions a real buyer would type, still returned zero, and a sentiment reading fell from 55 to 50. We reported all of it. A perfect structural score buys legibility, not preference.
  4. Treat a negative result as the next experiment. The zero on unbranded prompts told us what to work on next: separating our brand from a UK namesake, getting onto the ranked lists of Australian agencies that AI engines read, and stopping work on a score that had stopped moving.
  5. Change one thing, then retest with identical wording. We keep the prompts word for word between runs, log every run with a screenshot and the full response, and compare before and after. That is why the audit includes a 30-day recheck against the original 50 observations.

The same approach shows up in our research. We scored 88 of Australia’s 100 largest plumbing companies on AI visibility. The average was 68.8 out of 100, 89% had no statistics on their pages, and being bigger did not help. We also publish a timeline of how long results take, because the honest answer is that it varies.

What a small-business engagement looks like with us

The AEO Audit + DIY Fix Plan is a flat $1,500 AUD, one-off, with no retainer and no GST. You get checked findings about your website, 50 dated observations of what AI tools said (5 surfaces by 10 prompts), a prioritised fix list, instructions for your own builder, copyable prompts, a verification checklist, a result call and a 30-day recheck. It is delivered in 5 to 7 business days, and that figure describes our delivery time, not how fast AI will change. Start with the free AEO Score Calculator if you want a quick read on your site’s structure first.

Frequently asked questions

What is a GEO agency?

A GEO (generative engine optimisation) agency works on how AI answer tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok find, read and cite your business. GEO and AEO (answer engine optimisation) describe the same practice with different names. The term GEO comes from a 2024 peer-reviewed paper by researchers at Princeton, Georgia Tech, IIT Delhi and the Allen Institute for AI.

How much should a small business pay for GEO?

Prices vary and this page does not quote anyone else's. AISearch Global's audit is a flat $1,500 AUD, one-off, with no retainer and no GST. Whatever you are quoted, ask for the scope, the deliverables and the price in writing, and ask what is not included.

Can a GEO agency guarantee my business will be mentioned by AI?

No. AI platforms update on their own timelines and no agency controls them. Treat a guarantee of rankings or mentions as a red flag. A credible agency promises specific work, dated evidence and a recheck, not a result.

How do I know a GEO agency's results are real?

Ask to see dated results from the agency's own site, including results that went the wrong way, and the method behind them. A set of numbers that only ever goes up, with no method, is not evidence.

Is a bigger agency better for GEO?

Not necessarily. In AISearch Global's study of 88 of Australia's 100 largest plumbing companies, being bigger did not help AI visibility. Check focus, evidence and scope rather than size.
