We identified Australia's 100 largest plumbing and trade-contractor businesses by employee headcount, then ran every website through our free AEO Score Calculator — which scores 20 AI-visibility signals, including the 3 tactics the peer-reviewed Princeton GEO study found consistently lift AI citations: citing credible sources, including statistics, and using quotations. 88 of the 100 sites returned a usable score. The average was 68.8 out of 100 — and Australia's two biggest plumbing companies by staff count placed mid-table, well behind businesses a fraction their size.

The headline finding: size doesn't predict AI visibility

Australia's two largest plumbing companies by employee count are Planet Plumbing Group (140 staff) and Cooke & Dowsett Plumbing Group (129 staff). On AI visibility, they rank 62nd and 54th of the 88 businesses we scored — both grade C, both missing statistics and quotations, both showing keyword stuffing.

The company that actually tops the list — a perfect 100/100 — is Howrah Plumbing, a 25-person business in Hobart. Eight other businesses also hit 100/100, none of them in the top 20 by staff count.

This isn't a fluke. It's the exact pattern the Princeton GEO researchers found when they tested their tactics on real sites: applying the Cite Sources tactic alone lifted AI visibility by 115.1% for a site ranked 5th, against a −30.3% effect for the top-ranked site in the same query. Right now, almost nobody in this list is doing that — which means the business that starts is the business that wins the gap.

The one bright spot among the big players: O'Brien Electrical & Plumbing — the 3rd largest company on this list by staff count — also ranks 11th by AI visibility (97/100). It's proof that scale and AI visibility aren't in tension; most businesses on this list simply haven't done the work yet.

Methodology

Selection (who's on the list): the 100 largest plumbing and trade-contractor businesses operating in Australia, ranked by employee headcount, identified via B2B firmographic data. Selection is size-based only and has no bearing on the AI-visibility score below.

Scoring (how the rank is decided): every domain was run through AISearch Global's free AEO Score Calculator, which checks 20 AI-visibility signals — 17 structural AEO signals plus the 3 content tactics the peer-reviewed Princeton GEO study (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024) found consistently improve AI citation rates: citing credible sources, including statistics, and using quotations.

Exclusions: 12 of the 100 sites returned an error (blocked automated requests, timed out, or were unreachable) and are excluded rather than estimated. The ranking reflects the 88 businesses that returned a valid score.

What this is not: this is not a government, ASIC, or industry-body ranking, and it is not a measure of service quality, licensing, safety, or business legitimacy. It measures one thing only — how well-positioned a website is to be cited and recommended by AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, based on the same scoring framework used in AISearch Global's paid AI Visibility Audits.

What to do if your business is on this list

  2. 2Add quotations first. It's the single highest-impact tactic in the Princeton study (+40.9%) and the one 83% of this list is missing. A customer or staff quote (30+ words) is often a day's work.
  3. 3Replace vague claims with numbers. "Trusted by hundreds" becomes "187 jobs completed across Western Sydney since 2019." 89% of this list still has zero statistics on-page.
